      <image:title>Home - CITIES IN DUST</image:title>
<image:caption>Central Raqqa. Between October 2016 and October 2017- from the beginning of the campaign for Mosul until the end of that for Raqqa- the US -led coalition dropped 46,683 air released munitions in Iraq and Syria, the majority of which fell on the twin capitals of the ISIS caliphate. The cities were leveled in the fight to liberate them from their captors. A year after the bombing stopped and the fighters were routed, Raqqa and the Old City of Mosul still lay in ruins. Their destruction begs the question- what did the West win in its war against extremism if they stay forever uninhabitable? The life of these places remains frozen in time, at a moment just after the last bombs fell, the fires went out, and the US led coalition declared victory and moved on. But the Iraqis and Syrians of Mosul and Raqqa cannot move on. They are left to wonder at the scale of the destruction and the reality that they have been forgotten. <image:title>Stories - THE FALL OF KUNDUZ</image:title>
<image:caption>The northern Afghan city of Kunduz fell to the Taliban on September 28 when they captured the city in a lightning offensive. Days later, early on the morning of October 3rd, a US AC-130 Spectre gunship attacked the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Kunduz Trauma Center, burning the main hospital building completely and killing at least 46 patients and MSF staff. The airstrike came amid a confused and weak response from government forces to clear the city of insurgents, and ongoing operations to push them out of adjacent areas moved slowly as well. The takeover was a major victory for the insurgent group, marking the first time they had occupied a major Afghan city since they were driven from power in 2001.</image:caption>
